In the book of John, Jesus refers to Himself through many poetic and powerful word images. In JN. 10:9-10, He contrasts Himself to Satan by calling Himself the door and calling Satan the thief.
Jesus is the great and good Shepherd, the protector of the sheep. Satan is the thief. “(9) I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. (10) The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
Satan tries to steal our hearts, our souls, our minds, and our fruit. He tries to harden our hearts to God and the things of God- ultimately to steal our salvation. He tries to steal our identities so that we don’t realize who we really are. He tries to steal our happiness, joy, peace, and to break and discourage our souls.
He tries to steal our sanity and our mental bearing by filling our minds with lies and twisted truth. And he tries to steal our fruit as well. The fruit of our lives includes our successes, our influence, our reputations, and our legacies.
Stand behind the closed door of Jesus and always be watchful for the thief.
