The Need to Study in God's Word

2 Tim. 3:16-17 (NIV) says,”(16) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, (17) so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

(1) It is God-breathed.

It was written by the hand of men but by the leading of the same Holy Spirit of God. It is wisdom fashioned before the creation of the world and will remain relevant after the earth is gone.

(2) It is useful for teaching.

The origin of the world and mankind, the history of the world and mankind, the fate of the world and mankind are all a small portion of what can be gleaned, learned and taught from the Bible.

(3) It is useful for rebuking.

Morality, ethics, law, and right living are all laid out from God’s perspective. The Bible can be used to show us when we stray from God’s plan and intentions.

(4) It is useful for correcting.

The Bible is like the factory reset button of our lives. Whenever we wonder who we are or what our lives should look like, God’s Word can be used to reset us.

(5) It is useful for training in righteousness.

God is very clear and vocal about His expectations for His children, His church, His leaders, His followers, and so forth. The Bible can grow us and guide us. It can shape us and show us what is expected of a life committed to Jesus.

(6) It will thoroughly equip the servant of God for every good work.

Whomever God calls, He also equips. God does not call the equipped. He equips the called. One of His biggest equipping tools is regularly studying the Word of God.
