In the most quoted scripture in the Bible, we learn that Jesus is “the only begotten son” of the father. (John 3:16) Many people assume that “begotten” means that He was “born of” God – therefore, like us –created. Allow us to quickly dispel that heresy.
Basically understand this… The Greek word used for “only begotten” does not mean ‘born of’ or ‘created’. The word used is “monogenes”. According to Wikipedia, it means, “the only one of its kind within a specific relationship.”
So God, The Father, in John 3:16 is referring to Jesus, (The Son of God, yet also God Himself) – as the only one like Him ever! There is none other like Jesus. He is fully God and fully man. There is no one in all creation like Him. He is God, The Father’s, monogenes Son. One of a kind.
Beyond that, words and pages and books have no end to describe who Jesus really is. But for the purpose of this introduction, we will be as brief as possible.
God – The Son, a.k.a. Jesus, was the King in heaven before the creation of the earth. Not only is He not a creation of God, but all things in heaven and on earth were created in Him, by Him, and for Him. He is the beginning and the end of all things. He is the Alpha (the first letter in the Greek alphabet) and the Omega (the last letter). He holds our creation, our destiny, our salvation, and our eternal fates all in His hands.
He is our Savior, our Maker, our Lawyer and our Judge. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, the Lord of Lord, the King of kings, the Lion of Judah, the Lamb of God. Jesus is the promised Messiah (the anointed One). He is Emmanuel (God with us). He is the Redeemer in that He has bought us back for God, The Father.
Jesus bore the weight and paid the price for all of the sin of all mankind for all time!! That is why He is the monogenes Son of God. No one but Jesus could do or continue to do what He did and does.
Jesus is our God, and Lord, and Savior. He is our spiritual father. He is also, in essence, like a brother. But He is also our friend. He is the Teacher, the Healer, the Master, the Provider, and the Protector.
Jesus is the Bread of life, the Light of the world, the Door of the sheep, the Good Shepherd. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the true Vine. Jesus is the Word of God personified. And He is the Wisdom of God personified.
